Title : Holistic wellness & nurturing relationships: From struggles to strengths

Abstract:

The concept of wellness or complete wellness refers to a completely well rounded human being. It is inclusive of a holistic concept comprising our mind, body, and soul. However, our wellness can be compromised with the patterns of our faulty lifestyle including stress, faulty diets, sedentary life, smoking and alcoholism. In addition, the pressure to perform, factors related to urbanisation, our busy schedules and peer pressure seemingly contributes more to our faulty lifestyle patterns. Consequently, stress has become a normal part of life for most of us owing majorly to these faulty lifestyle habits. But, if left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological and even physical problems, including palpitation, high blood pressure, chest pains and even coronary artery disease. Hence it is essential to identify the sources of stress (stressors), types of stress (Eustress and Distress), causal factors, and symptomatology and learn to deal with it effectively before it impacts one's Heart & Health.

Nurturing Relationships: One of the biggest causes of stress in today’s world is Difficult Relationships - a silent killer.  With the rise in challenging relationship dynamics, addressing the root causes of relationship stress has become the need of the hour to cultivate healthier connections and emotional well-being .As Esther Perel, a known psychotherapist states,“When people live in acute stress, either the cracks in their relationship will be amplified or the light that shines through the cracks will be amplified. You get an amplification of the best and of the worst.”

Changing Faces in Relationships: A decade ago the relationships were really simpler and easier to handle. Research by Morgan Stanley shows, “45% of US prime working age women (ages 25-44) will be single by 2030” primarily due to delay in marriages and childbirth.Another research by ITC Fiama reported that, “Relationship struggles are the single largest source of stress for a staggering 87 percent of GenZ.” Stress affects the different types of relationships that shape us: Romantic, Professional, Social, Friends, Acquaintances.

The purpose is to guide in identifying red flags in our relationships. Dr Nicole LePera, a known psychologist, states about disempowerment, “When we are disempowered, … we become reactive to the environment. … This makes us feel powerless [and makes us] victims of the circumstances. [To change that powerless feeling] we have to practise consciousness.” To address this, it is essential to understand how to identify and navigate difficult and disempowered relationships. These might include struggling to express emotions, holding onto grudges or resentment from past experiences, failing to set or uphold boundaries among a few.

A key aspect of effective stress management is to focus on building empowered relationships by emphasising on acceptance, accessibility, affectionability, attention, acknowledgement, appreciation and adjusting.Additionally, have a conversation about the love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch, can deepen connection and understanding. Lastly, it is crucial to figure out how to work through conflicts as a team and prioritise each other’s long term goals, while offering space and support for individual wants and needs.
