Title : Evaluation of lifestyle changes compliance in patients undergoing CABG and it benefits
Abstract:
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains a cornerstone for advanced coronary artery disease (CAD), but long-term success is closely linked to patients’ adherence to recommended lifestyle modifications. Optimizing perioperative care through nutritional management is increasingly recognized as vital for improving outcomes. Diet plays a multifaceted role in both preoperative preparation and postoperative recovery. Preoperatively, a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber may reduce systemic inflammation, stabilize atherosclerotic plaques and enhance endothelial function, potentially decreasing perioperative morbidity. Postoperatively, tailored nutrition supports wound healing, minimizes infection risk, and are proven to reduce graft failure rates, recurrent ischemic events, and overall cardiovascular health. Also helps to manage metabolic complications such as hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Lifestyle counselling and sustained dietary adherence are essential components of cardiac rehabilitation programs. Furthermore, long-term dietary modifications – emphasizing a balanced diet are crucial for secondary prevention, and recurrent cardiac events. Evidence supports the integration of dietitians into the multidisciplinary care team to provide individualized nutrition plans tailored to each patient’s clinical profile, comorbidities, and cultural preferences. Despite its significant impact, nutritional management is a critical yet underemphasized factor that can significantly impact both short- and long-term outcomes in CABG patients. Thus, diet is the foundation of holistic care in CABG patients, with clear benefits spanning the preoperative, postoperative and long-term phases. Integrating structured nutritional protocols into standard clinical pathways to optimize recovery, minimize complications, and enhance long-term cardiovascular health.
