Title : PFO closure in thrombophilia: Evaluating the evidence for patients without prior thromboembolic events
Abstract:
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is a common anatomical lesion occurring in 20-34% of the population, and it may be a cause for paradoxical embolism to the cerebral or coronary arteries causing stroke or myocardial ischemia. PFO management in patients with thrombophilia without prior cerebrovascular events remains poorly defined due to lack of robust data. This study aimed to review the existing literature on PFO closure in such patients, identifying a significant gap in the relevant research. The absence of targeted research highlights the challenge of formulating clear guidelines for this high-risk group. Our findings emphasize the need for large-scale, well-designed studies to better inform treatment strategies for thrombophilia patients with PFO, aiming to enhance clinical decision-making and patient care.
