Biography:
Dr. Birnbaum is a physician-scientist working at Baylor College of Medicine. He has been in practice for more than 33 years treating patients with diverse cardiac diseases. Realizing the limited therapeutic options for patients with heart failure, Dr. Birnbaum's research involves myocardial protection against ischemia-reperfusion insult and the effects of diabetes and anti-diabetic medications on the heart. In addition, he studies the electrocardiogram in acute myocardial ischemia and in patients with pacemakers. Dr. Birnbaum is the editor in chief of Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy and an associate editor of Cardiovascular Diabetology and Journal of Electrocardiology and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals. Dr. Birnbaum is the John S. Dunn Chair in Cardiology Research and Education. He has published over 420 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals and he is a co-author of two books.
